Well, so I think for for our discussion. And we were just at that point where integrated development environments were coming along. I love them. Let’s jump right in. Mark was, was one of our more recent additions. It sounds sort of trite to say âthink bigger,â but to have a group of people that are pushing you. Prior, Lisa worked in IT consulting, helping large organizations solve complex problems with code. And then I was amazed at how well it translated online. If you get selected in Endeavor, there’s no equity exchange, and that remains the case for life for the entrepreneurs that are part Endeavor. I go to work and then I come home and they're two separate things. Now everyone realizes that we really need stronger telemedicine resources, especially for everyday conditions your family might face like cold strep through a flu earache UTI. I had my first marriage there. You’re one of our fantastic local mentors that we lean on a lot and have great counsel for our companies. Because if there isn’t any startup activity, since we focus on that scaling stage, we’d have zero pipeline and we’re not in the building a startup ecosystem business. Endeavor — letâs backup a little bit — is a global brand and Atlanta is three years or so in the making. I loved it. I think it's time had come in 2016 and it's only gaining steam. Endeavor Atlanta’s launch is made possible by seed funding from Cox Enterprises, a leading communications, media and automotive services company, along with strong community support from local entrepreneurs. What do you mean tier two market? I think that Atlanta entrepreneurs are so hungry and that Endeavor Atlanta just really puts that fire under them to be like, âOkay, how bad do you want it? We’re still fairly new in Atlanta. The second part of that is that we look at data. Aaron Hurst Founding Managing Director, Endeavor Atlanta. I guess mentor or startup. My freshman-year-old fax machine. It’s more of a data driven approach to looking at ecosystems that haven’t reached the potential that we think they can. Well, I’m a huge fan of Endeavor Atlanta, but I want to definitely keep the words in your mouth — I can think of 20 reasons myself but I’d love to hear from you and Alaysia — about why an Atlanta founder would want to be an Endeavor entrepreneur. I was super excited that Valor was able to participate in that first equity round and could not agree more that his perspective on what it takes to build a world-class company is first class. It's really important to us to see all of the deals that are high potential, especially around technology being built by experienced founders right here. We actually got better attendees marks on Startup Runway virtually than we do physically. How does someone get involved in the Endeavor network? Obviously as we’ve proven success and the value we can add, we’re starting to get more inbound referrals, including from local investors, which is great. Cool. It wasn’t an easy process — according to Aaron Hurst, Endeavor Atlanta Managing Director, 2.5 percent of the companies initially screened for the program make it in. ... 46 others named Aaron Hurst are on LinkedIn. Lisa [00:26:48] I didn't have a favorite book of those three. Lisa [00:18:55] You know, I remember waking up that morning and thinking this is going to be horrible because it's such a wonderful face to face event. Aaron [00:10:00] That's great. And we're talking about the early eighties. Hey, waves are fun. I think most entrepreneurs are a part of society that is literally a little bit odd. And so I left what I was doing in enterprise tech consulting and software development to launch right to market. Some industries have real opportunity because suddenly all of our habits have changed. Do you believe entrepreneurship is more nature or or, you know, you're born with it or more nurture that you learn it as you go? We have 28 percent of the Fortune 500 headquarters. Just changing gears here for a minute, a lot of the people who listen to this podcast are interested in the Atlanta market but may not actually be in the Atlanta market. Usually that means at least $3 million in revenue, but I think the average now is around $10M to $12M and have the potential to create a lot of jobs, economic development, and wealth in the community. So, yeah, it was good stuff. It is really is a very relationship driven business, so we love to grab coffee or lunch with anyone who’s interested, whether it’s applying to be an entrepreneur and going through the process or being a mentor or just frankly learning more about what we’re doing. It was so exciting. We really focus on entrepreneurs who are all about giving back and paying it forward. I can't not do this inspiration, which was the tech entrepreneurs in the Southeast, don't have sufficient access to quality professional seed capital. We can do a little bit more. We’ll have to have you back on the program in a few months for an update. Awesome. Then our mentor network at least covers that, but also includes mentors and countries where we don’t have offices, like in the UK and Germany and France. So I think I'll probably go get some tonight. You know, the economic reality of Covid, when you're having those conversations, what are you're seeing are the most essential things for companies to focus on. I knew you went to UT for grad school, but I did not realize you spent all of your classroom time post-high school in Texas. I feel like the time at Endeavor Atlanta flies by. Why can’t we build more businesses like that here?â. So I got a chance to really get into technology from a very low and easy bar. Another one is: do they possess the growth mindset and values of the global Endeavor community? How are we going to move forward with that, too? It's culture, but culture at a distance. I feel like I'm such a part of their life now because we're doing diligence, not just looking at what they want us to see when we visit their office, but actually connecting with them in their in their real world where their four year old might come up behind mama and say, look at my new drawing. It was nineteen ninety. In Mark’s first interview — this is probably within the first 60 seconds of his first interview at his international panel in Tokyo last year — the first panelist looked at him in the eyes and said, âMark, I see that you’re trying to create 10,000 jobs by 2020. I've been lucky enough to participate in and a few of them at the one you just held virtually was fantastic. Tell us more about the fund what you're looking for and how can founders reach you. You may not hit it in 2020, but I want you to think about how you can take your model and everything you’ve done in your career to create 100,000 jobs. I know he’s involved in Valor as well. And when it comes to places where we're looking to see new innovation and really excited about it, of course, future of work, there's a lot of platforming that needs to happen. So I think as much as you're willing to share love, to hear a bit about that and how you eventually became an entrepreneur yourself, and I would love to hear that story. Unpacking that a little bit, it sounds like it’s really broad like Alaysia was saying. And now with the pandemic and the new work from anywhere reality those, double digits are getting bigger. Aaron [00:21:47] So I'm going to jump into the Endeavor Question segment here real quick. Earlier in his career, Aaron worked as a Venture Fellow at seed stage Venture Capital firm IDEA Fund Partners. Aaron Hurst is a globally recognized systems entrepreneur who has used the science of purpose to change the way we work and service. And now we're kind of merging the two back together, which is really interesting. Endeavor Atlanta has not yet announced when it will begin recruiting companies for the first program class. And that's what they do. The Global Supplier Diversity Conference (GSDC) helps underrepresented Founders pursue, win and successfully maintain corporate contracts. My family's always been involved in killing what you eat. People are even moving back from the coasts that have had startup experience or scale of experience, which is great. The new office will be run by Aaron Hurst, who joins Endeavor Atlanta from the global technology company Ceridian, where he most recently served as vice president of global solutions. Weâre industry agnostic, but when I just kind of think about the entrepreneurs that we work with, those are two normal qualifiers. And that is not what the population in the south east looks like. Yeah, it's very. I know a lot of education investors are really excited about the opportunities now. But by no means is that a quick and easy mission that I'm on. Back to Mark at Chime Solutions. What has been a silver lining for you during the crisis in the quarantine? Are you the next Finalist? So what time? Stay … Some really, really impressive founders in it. So Startup Runway. Endeavor continues to reinvent itself around how to help the entrepreneurial spirit. They donate capital to create grant checks for these founders. What other industries do you think are really just going be changed forever because of that and everything that it's caused and maybe some that may or may change for a time. So given your success, what would you consider one of your giveback goals? Aaron [00:25:52] Yeah. Does it really work out? The first question is, as you know, at Endeavor, we envision a world where people can accomplish anything when they have access to opportunity and encouragement. All right. Aaron, anything you’d add to that? But that’s an optional fund. There are so many acquirers who are actually headquartered here and so much talent is actually just born here that having access to capital at the seed stage is a no brainer. Thinking beyond the bottom line is something Wilson shares with more than a dozen other founders who are part of a local accelerator program called Endeavor Atlanta. And I think there's a lot of ways to do it. I appreciate your time. For example, one of our investments that's closing very soon is a continuous employee background monitoring company using a lot of A.I. Before Valor, Lisa founded a digital marketing agency recognized as one of the “Top 10 Agencies for Tech Startups.” She supported hundreds of tech startups through their exits to public markets and acquisitions. The full-day conference is designed to increase the number of successful minority-owned, woman-owned and other disadvantaged small business suppliers. How would a founder know to reach out to you? So I'm just going to go through them fairly quickly. So I think that a lot of the the learnings that are sustaining companies in their growth have to do with those who are successful in creating a culture that can reach you anywhere and is really playing to creative leadership teams. It's just you and the panelists that are sitting in the conversation, which we were super scared of launching at a few months ago. So you had to be a woman-led or a founder of color led firm to pitch Startup Runway. So, you know, dial back your expectations. It’s not required that Endeavor entrepreneurs use it if they’re raising a qualified fund. I have been incredibly impressed, in just my own small experience with Endeavor, with the global scale of the network. Right, it has progressed. Speaking to founders in their homes, in their cars. I've been amazed at how much comfort I can gain. That’s essentially how it works. Lisa [00:27:14] I think this is a great interview. At our final stage of selection, Endeavor has this long selection process you have to get through to get in the final stages and international selection panel, and you go through a series of interviews. We went from sort of agrarian where work and family and life were all merged together to work as separate. But it sure did. And I started learning to set by basically quoting from the workbook that was right next to the computer. By that, I mean does it have enough startup activity to even have an Endeavor office that could be successful? So how has your thesis or that thesis changed over the last five years, if at all? Are you ready, Lisa? I feel like I told George he’s having his coming out party in 2020. And it's I think I saw somebody write that there have been jokes about how much money companies have been spending on digital transformations. Just to kind of close on how you are seeing the Southeast, now that you’re expanding into Birmingham and all of this, what do you think is unique about the Southeast as a startup ecosystem? Aaron [00:24:43] Yeah, I completely agree.
