Rick had already done artwork for Greg Noll (decorating Noll’s early price lists, pictured below), the Illustrated Surfer’s Dictionary, and Bing Surfboards. Griffin took what he learned from the San Francisco scene when Severson later asked him to produce the cover art for his surf film masterpiece, “Pacific Vibrations”. It was this event that kicked off the Summer of Love.
But Murphy changed right alongside surf culture and Griffin himself. His father was an engineer and amateur archaeologist and as a boy, Rick accompanied him on digs in the Southwest. It was during this time that Rick was exposed to the Native American and ghost town artifacts that were to influence his later work. When Griffin first unveiled Murphy, they were both teenaged, “aw shucks, ain’t this swell” kids, just stoked to be there, riding waves and having adventures. He produced the Illustrated Book of Saint John and later created work for the Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa. We even went to see the Rolling Stones play at a teen concert and Rick got to meet the band backstage.
