i would recommend the reverse (go up Helon taylor) so you are hitting knife edge with as much of your energy as possible and you get the chimney portion out of the way at the beginning of your knife edge sojourn. adventures and follow local regulations. Thee were trees that grew 30-40 feet not up, but along the ground. (see map route)

But like all mountain hikes I've experienced, this one, early on, beats you up by slowly wearing you down with its stony and rooty terrain. From the park's South Gate, Kidney Pond is about an hours drive along the Park Tote Road heading Northwest. Katahdin Total Distance: 14 km. The next mile, known as the Hunt Spur, is very steep and difficult until you reach the "Gateway." Of course you could hike to the park from the AT trail, but we didn't take that option this time. But climbed the mountain, strenuous but i loved the hike and definitely rewarding at the top. After about another mile, it is a clear scramble through balsam fir and over rocks. Such are missions of that sort... Enjoy beautiful scenery, rock scrambling, and mountain views.
About a mile into the boulders there’s one last climb over a shelf know as the “Gateway” to Katahdin’s mystical tableland.
