The Erie house could have easily been used as it already exists. and there are better canal displays, including areas where you can see all four versions of the canal side by side, so I won't say it's can't miss, but it's interesting if you happen to be going by and need to stretch your legs. Lock 52 was abandoned, now preserved for your enjoyment.You can access the lock as a rest area on the eastbound New York Thruway at mile marker 309 but if you're not on the superslab, you can access the lock from NY 31 (Rochester Road) in Port Byron. One was in the lobby with the model of the lock, and she was very knowledgable and enthusiastic about telling the canal story and answering questions. Nice historical tour of the exhibits. I waited a pretty long time for them to acknowledge my presence and they'd have to be blind not to see me right there, but they continued to chat nonstop and ignore me. The only access is off the Thruway eastbound. The facilities are modern and well maintained.
This rudeness should not be tolerated at a State run facility like this.There are well preserved remains of a canal lock, and a few small buildings to tell the story of what went on here. Treats and even had a dog bowl for water.

The tavern (Erie House) is an especially interesting artifact, featuring the original cash register, wood stove, advertising and signage, piano and most of the original bar, with sections of the bar and interior walls intentionally left unrestored so visitors can appreciate the efforts that went into bringing them back to life.

If you're traveling east on the NY State Thruway, and have some time to kill, this is a must-see for anyone interested in history, engineering, the Canal itself and/or preservation in general. This is a really easy on/off from I-90 and an outstanding opportunity to learn about the Erie Canal. was golf cart transported... 318 Erie Boulevard East. The visitors center is very nice and new feeling, with exhibits on the old Erie Canal, with a model of the lock that is in the park, so you can see what it would look like in the time of operation. The museum is seasonal and I might have been the last guest of 2020. And, picnic tables. Which makes zero sense at all from any kind of perspective -- security, accounting, or otherwise.
The workers are also very helpful and informative. A great stop along the NYS Thruway between exits 40 and 41. (You can find it on y'all tube: I've stopped here a few times in the past year. It gives a good idea of what a lock stop was like including overnight accomodations. Overall, very cool complex and worth a stop for a history lesson while cruising down the I90. You can access this facility from route 31 in Port Byron, or from the I-90 (NYS Thruway) in the eastbound direction only, near milepost 309. The exhibits are great and the people are very attentive and friendly. Right on the thruway, you can come from "town" but you'll have to walk in. There is an audio tour that you can download to your mobile device, and I wanted to try it. They have a new building with exhibits and a few historic buildings as well. Take an hour or so and relive the Erie Canal days. The rear area of the place, with the old restored buildings, is run and owned by the Canal Society, the non-profit that also staffs the place.

There was a dry dock across the way, it was filled in after the canal was relocated in 1917. The Erie Canal was widened to "7 and 70," that is, 7 feet deep and 70 feet wide and in many places was moved.This is one of those cases. Did you know that the builders first constructed the stone locks and then dug the canal that carried the water?At the site you'll find a tourist center that is lightly equipped with exhibits, the old lock itself and an adjacent period house, recently refurbished.A great way to finally get a look! This attraction is free and deserves a full hour of your time if you stop. Just the same, viewing the model gives one a mental image of how the locks worked in the halcyon days of the Erie Canal.Just outside the door is a three-sided kiosk with three interpretive panels that describe the lock, tell you about the original canal system and how it is currently configured, and what the canal meant to the town of Port Byron. There is a museum and display inside the building you can check out before (or after) you access the lock itself.
